You burned the negative space instead of the character. I've never seen that before. It must've take ages, but it looks great :D

it was jsut a matter of burning the surface then removing the wood. it was a fairly easy process, even if it did leave a lot of saw dust and woodshaving all over my carpet...

Wow! So you burn the entire surface, and then sand off, or peel away the burnt bits for the places where you want a character?

The patterns are carved in, the dragon was made by removing the charring using a dremel.
